The Sobriety Songbook is a 12-month guided recovery series of masterclasses that will explore the emotional journey of sobriety through music, lyrics and storytelling. Led by Dr. Claire Watts, it will draw from her extensive experience as an academic and singer songwriter.

This series will use powerful songs and artists as entry points into key themes of recovery such as honesty, identity, resilience, belonging and hope. Music has a unique ability to reach places that conversation alone often cannot. Many people in recovery describe songs as the moments where they first recognised their own story, their pain or their strength.

This series of masterclasses will use music intentionally as a reflective tool to deepen understanding of sobriety and personal growth.

Each monthly session focuses on one song or artist connected to a recovery theme. Participants listen together, explore the meaning behind the lyrics and reflect on how the message relates to their own recovery journey.

Claire Watts is a singer songwriter, musician and academic living in West Clare, Ireland.

This masterclass will reflect on the popular song "This Is Me" from the musical "The Greatest Showman". We will use this song as an investigative lens to reflect on the theme of self-acceptance. Following a gentle discussion on what emotions arise for us while listening to the song, we will proceed with a guided analysis of the lyrics and music and look at how recovery requires us to step into new identities without shame.
